easyJet Under-Seat Bag Size

easyJet allows one small cabin bag free, up to 45 x 36 x 20 cm including any handles and wheels, weighing up to 15 kg. It has to fit under the seat in front of you.

The handles-and-wheels clause is the part most pages leave out, and it is the part that catches people at the gate. Measure the whole packed object, not the fabric panel.

Including handles and wheels

easyJet's allowance is 45 x 36 x 20 cm, and the wording on their own page includes handles and wheels in that measurement. Most pages quoting the size leave the clause out.

On a soft bag it rarely matters. On a wheeled case it matters a great deal, because the wheels and the telescopic handle housing are part of the depth whether you are using them or not. A case advertised at 45 x 36 x 20 measured to the shell is over once the wheels are counted.

It is also the fairer way to measure, and it is how a sizer works anyway. A metal frame has no way of ignoring a wheel.

How easyJet compares

easyJet are the most generous of the six carriers in the table above. Ryanair, Jet2, TUI and Wizz Air all set 40 x 30 x 20. British Airways set 40 x 30 x 15.

The practical upshot is that a bag built for the other four goes into an easyJet sizer with five centimetres spare on one dimension and six on another. If you fly a mix of carriers, buying to the stricter number and enjoying the slack on easyJet is the easier way round.

Buying to the easyJet allowance instead gives you a bag that is over on four of the other five.

If you want more than the free allowance, easyJet sell a large cabin bag at 56 x 45 x 25 cm, again including handles and wheels. That one goes in the overhead locker.

The 15 kg limit

easyJet put a weight on the small cabin bag: 15 kg. They are one of only two carriers in the table that state a weight at all, the other being Wizz Air at 10 kg.

In practice 15 kg is generous for a bag of that size. You would have to work at it. Filling 45 x 36 x 20 with clothing lands nowhere near the limit, and the people who reach it are usually carrying books, tools or camera gear.

Worth knowing rather than worrying about.

Before you buy anything

Measure it the way the gate does

  1. Pack the bag the way you will actually fly with it. An empty bag measures smaller and tells you nothing.
  2. Flatten the straps against the back panel. Gate sizers make no allowance for a strap sticking out.
  3. Measure the widest point of each face, handles and pockets included. Not the fabric panel, the whole object.
  4. Compare against the airline you are flying, not the one you flew last time.
